Kingston Hidden Artist Collective

Kingston Hidden Artist Collective (KHAC) began in August 2021 informed by conversations between Ali Sheikh, a Queen’s student, and a local Kingston artist. After discussing issues centred on houselessness in Kingston, the artistic community, and the lack of career opportunities in the form of partnerships between Kingston artists and businesses, KHAC was founded as a liaison between the community and the artists in the collective.

Artworks created by artists in the collective are sold through KHAC’s website, where users can purchase the original works or printed reproductions. Proceeds from the artworks are given directly to the artists. With livable wages and work opportunities at the core of KHAC’s mission, community exhibitions in public spaces are important to facilitating conversation between the artists and the community, such as with their recent exhibition at Elm Street Café.

The artworks act as a mediator between the artists and the public, humanizing issues such as houselessness experienced by member of the collective. The initiative centres the artists’ careers, platforming conversations about the livelihoods of artists and the communities that support them.
